Masjid Umar Bin Khattab Islamic Society was originally founded in the 1980s by a small group of Afghan refugee families who arrived in Canada after fleeing war, persecution, and instability during the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan. Seeking religious freedom, safety, and a better future for their children, these families came to Canada with very little but they carried their faith, resilience, and commitment to preserving Islamic values.
What began with approximately 13 Afghan families has grown into one of Western Canada’s most important Islamic community institutions, serving thousands of Afghan families across British Columbia and supporting newcomers from across Canada.
For many newly arrived refugees and immigrants, Masjid Umar Bin Khattab has been the first place they visit after arriving in Canada, a place where they reconnect with family members, childhood friends, neighbours, and people from their villages after years of displacement.
The mosque has helped families rebuild their lives by providing spiritual guidance, prayer services, community support, refugee assistance, youth mentorship, food support, educational programs, and a strong sense of belonging.
Today, Masjid Umar Bin Khattab continues to serve all Muslims while preserving the legacy of the Afghan families who built this institution through sacrifice, faith, and hard work.
Our vision is to establish a welcoming Islamic Centre that strengthens faith, supports community development, promotes education, and serves the Muslim community of British Columbia for generations to come.
Masjid Umar Bin Khattab is dedicated to providing the Muslim community with a place to worship Allah and grow in faith. Our mission is to support both Muslims and non-Muslims through Islamic education, community outreach, and social support while promoting understanding, respect, and positive values within society.
Masjid Umar Bin Khattab was built by refugee families who came to Canada with very little but they carried their faith, resilience, and hope for future generations. Today, that responsibility belongs to all of us. Your donations help keep the doors of Allah’s house open every single day while helping us build a larger future Islamic centre for generations to come.
For many families, this masjid is more than a building, it is their spiritual home, their support system, and their connection to faith, community, and belonging. Every donation helps preserve Islam for future generations.”
